For nurses

Shift three of three. And the back thing again.

For the nurse whose back pain outlasted the patient she lifted in March. Back pain that won't go away is often coming from your brain, not your spine.

A composite story

Her story

Third 12-hour shift this week. She hasn't sat down since the 7 am handoff, and there was never a minute to feel anything about the day: the family down the hall, the patient who didn't make it, the charge nurse who snapped at her.

Her back started hurting after a lift in March. A strain like that heals. Hers didn't, and it's always worst on the hardest weeks, which aren't always the heaviest ones.

What's going on

Back pain that won't go away is often coming from your brain, not your spine. The pain is real and physical.

Your brain's job is to protect you, and that includes protecting you from emotional pain. The conversation you keep putting off. The fight that's still replaying in your head. The pressure you carry on your shoulders every day. Some people can be distracted from all that by something small. Not you. You'd see right through it. So your brain has to give you something real to feel: physical pain.

It usually borrows an excuse. A tweak lifting the car seat, a bad night's sleep, an old injury. Something that should hurt for a week or two. Then the pain keeps going for months, and the injury takes the blame.

Sounds crazy. It's also been tested. In a University of Colorado study, 2 out of 3 people who learned it were pain-free or close to it after four weeks. Results vary. The science

This is how it stops. Talk back.

When the pain shows up, you answer your brain instead of obeying it. Pick what you'd say back and watch the alarm.

The pain is real and physical. This is a demo of the practice, not treatment.

My job is physical. Isn't the pain just my job?

Lifting can strain a back, and strains heal. Most injuries heal within about three months. When the pain keeps going for months, or flares on the emotionally hardest weeks, the brain is often what keeps it going. The pain is real and physical either way.

Can I do this on shift?

The talking back takes seconds, so yes: in the supply room, on the walk to your car. The rest is about 10 minutes a day at home.

So it's all in my head?

No. The pain is in your back, and it's real. Your brain is causing it, which is different from imagining it. Blushing works the same way, and your face really does turn red.

Is this a subscription?

No. One payment, nothing renews. The Program is $59 and the Guide is $19, and both come with the Good Days Guarantee: if it isn't for you, reply to your receipt within 30 days and you get every dollar back.
