about

we started this because women kept leaving appointments with a scan, a shrug, & a prescription.

You might know how it goes. There's the MRI that supposedly explains everything, even though a 2015 review of more than 3,000 people with no back pain found bulging and worn discs all over their scans too. There's the specialist who says "it's probably stress" in a voice that means he's done. And there are the years of being careful, lifting carefully, sitting carefully, until careful is the main thing people know about you.

We read the research so you don't have to. What it says, more and more, is hopeful. Most back pain that hangs around for months or years isn't coming from a broken body. It's coming from a nervous system that got stuck in protect mode. The brain learned the pain the way it learns anything, which means it can unlearn it. In a 2022 trial published in JAMA Psychiatry, 66% of people with chronic back pain were pain-free or close to it after four weeks of a therapy that never touched their spines.

That's neuroscience, and it has a funny consequence. The gentle stuff (noticing your feelings, breathing, moving without fear, being honest with yourself) turns out to be the stuff with the evidence behind it.

Feather & Spine is where we practice that together. The name is the idea: lightness and structure at the same time. You were never fragile. You were protecting yourself, and you're allowed to stop.

we're not doctors, and we'll tell you that first

Feather & Spine is education. We take published pain research (trials, imaging studies, the research on fear and avoidance) and explain it so it feels like a conversation instead of a lecture. We aren't physicians, we don't diagnose anything, and nothing here replaces medical care.

This matters more than a legal footnote would. Everything we teach only applies to pain a doctor has already checked. That's why the quiz starts with a safety check, why the guide says it on page one, and why "please go see your doctor" is something we say a lot. If a website ever tells you to skip the doctor, close the tab.

what we promise, and what we won't do

We promise receipts: a real, linked source next to every claim. We promise honest timelines. Most women who respond notice a change somewhere between week two and week six, and the deeper change takes months. We promise we'll never hide a bad review.

We won't make cure claims, invent statistics, promise to heal your trauma in 30 days, or tell you it's all in your head. You've heard enough of that.
